English Standard Version (ESV)

Jeremiah 2:14–3:10

14   “Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant?
    Why then has he become a prey?
15   The lions have roared against him;
    they have roared loudly.
  They have made his land a waste;
    his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.
16   Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes
    have shaved the crown of your head.
17   Have you not brought this upon yourself
    by forsaking the LORD your God,
    when he led you in the way?
18   And now what do you gain by going to Egypt
    to drink the waters of the Nile?
  Or what do you gain by going to Assyria
    to drink the waters of the Euphrates?
19   Your evil will chastise you,
    and your apostasy will reprove you.
  Know and see that it is evil and bitter
    for you to forsake the LORD your God;
    the fear of me is not in you,
      declares the Lord GOD of hosts.
20   “For long ago I broke your yoke
    and burst your bonds;
    but you said, ‘I will not serve.’
  Yes, on every high hill
    and under every green tree
    you bowed down like a whore.
21   Yet I planted you a choice vine,
    wholly of pure seed.
  How then have you turned degenerate
    and become a wild vine?
22   Though you wash yourself with lye
    and use much soap,
    the stain of your guilt is still before me,
      declares the Lord GOD.
23   How can you say, ‘I am not unclean,
    I have not gone after the Baals’?
  Look at your way in the valley;
    know what you have done—
  a restless young camel running here and there,
24     a wild donkey used to the wilderness,
  in her heat sniffing the wind!
    Who can restrain her lust?
  None who seek her need weary themselves;
    in her month they will find her.
25   Keep your feet from going unshod
    and your throat from thirst.
  But you said, ‘It is hopeless,
    for I have loved foreigners,
    and after them I will go.’
26   “As a thief is shamed when caught,
    so the house of Israel shall be shamed:
  they, their kings, their officials,
    their priests, and their prophets,
27   who say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’
    and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’
  For they have turned their back to me,
    and not their face.
  But in the time of their trouble they say,
    ‘Arise and save us!’
28   But where are your gods
    that you made for yourself?
  Let them arise, if they can save you,
    in your time of trouble;
  for as many as your cities
    are your gods, O Judah.
29   “Why do you contend with me?
    You have all transgressed against me,
      declares the LORD.
30   In vain have I struck your children;
    they took no correction;
  your own sword devoured your prophets
    like a ravening lion.
31   And you, O generation, behold the word of the LORD.
  Have I been a wilderness to Israel,
    or a land of thick darkness?
  Why then do my people say, ‘We are free,
    we will come no more to you’?
32   Can a virgin forget her ornaments,
    or a bride her attire?
  Yet my people have forgotten me
    days without number.
33   “How well you direct your course
    to seek love!
  So that even to wicked women
    you have taught your ways.
34   Also on your skirts is found
    the lifeblood of the guiltless poor;
  you did not find them breaking in.
    Yet in spite of all these things
35   you say, ‘I am innocent;
    surely his anger has turned from me.’
  Behold, I will bring you to judgment
    for saying, ‘I have not sinned.’
36   How much you go about,
    changing your way!
  You shall be put to shame by Egypt
    as you were put to shame by Assyria.
37   From it too you will come away
    with your hands on your head,
  for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust,
    and you will not prosper by them.
3:1   “If a man divorces his wife
    and she goes from him
  and becomes another man’s wife,
    will he return to her?
  Would not that land be greatly polluted?
  You have played the whore with many lovers;
    and would you return to me?
      declares the LORD.
  Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see!
    Where have you not been ravished?
  By the waysides you have sat awaiting lovers
    like an Arab in the wilderness.
  You have polluted the land
    with your vile whoredom.
  Therefore the showers have been withheld,
    and the spring rain has not come;
  yet you have the forehead of a whore;
    you refuse to be ashamed.
  Have you not just now called to me,
    ‘My father, you are the friend of my youth—
  will he be angry forever,
    will he be indignant to the end?’
  Behold, you have spoken,
    but you have done all the evil that you could.”

The LORD said to me in the days of King Josiah: “Have you seen what she did, that faithless one, Israel, how she went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and there played the whore? And I thought, ‘After she has done all this she will return to me,’ but she did not return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it. She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore. Because she took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with stone and tree. 10 Yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me with her whole heart, but in pretense, declares the LORD.”

John 20:24–31

24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

King James Version (KJV)

Jeremiah 2:14-3:10

2:14Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled? 2:15The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant. 2:16Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head. 2:17Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? 2:18And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? 2:19Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts. 2:20For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot. 2:21Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? 2:22For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD. 2:23How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; 2:24A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. 2:25Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. 2:26As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, 2:27Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. 2:28But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah. 2:29Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. 2:30In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion. 2:31O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee? 2:32Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 2:33Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. 2:34Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these. 2:35Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. 2:36Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. 2:37Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

3:1They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.3:2Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.3:3Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.3:4Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?3:5Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.3:6The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.3:7And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.3:8And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.3:9And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.3:10And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.

John 20:24-31

24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.25The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.28And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.29Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.30And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
